How to find out the UK car insurer?

A car hit into my father very recently while he was crossing the zebra-crossing. With all the confusion and shock my father forgot to get hold of the drivers insurance company name. The telephone number the driver gave was fake, but the car registration was legit. Its been reported to the police but they won't state the insurer and it will take a long time while before they get round it dealing with the report themselves.

How would I go about obtaining the insurers name so that I can inform them and make a clam?|||contrary to what many people have said you are actually in a fairly good position in terms of finding out who the insurer is, however you must go through your own insurance company as due to data protection you cannot search for this info directly. However all vehicle registrations and insurance details are stored on the Motor Insurance Database which your insurance company has access to, so just report the accident and they should be able to do the rest. However it will be a completely different thing when it comes to proving liability for the accident

best of luck|||In the states when we have this type of situation we go to the Department of Motor Vehicles which issued the registration plate for that vehicle. Normally if you have a police report number and pay the fee the Department of Motor Vehicles will provide you with the insurance information that the person who registered the vehicle gave them when they first registered the vehicle. I imagine the UK must have a similar system. Go to where you first registered your vehicle they should be able to tell you.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!|||Your in a bit of a difficult situation there. Data Protection Laws will be used to prevent you obtaining that information. It may be possible to obtain it via a DVLA check, but this would probably require a crime reference number or even the police to perform it anyway, which makes it a bit pointless.

Unfortunately the easiest way would be to wait for the police to deal with the report. Keep on at them about it too.|||Seriously, good luck with this. I had the same thing and never got any money for it, I had to pay myself.

One thing may help you is that theres a few companies about which act on your behalf to help claim from the driver. As with anything they take a slice of the money, but at least you get the main chunk of it back.

Type into google something like 'car accident claims' and see what comes up. You'll find something.|||Thats ridiculous!! the police are crap, thats a hit and run, it is serious!! I don't think you can find out I mean I don't think you can find out anything with a registration, privacy laws etc its prob best to go through the police. http://www.checkthatcar.com/registration鈥?/a> I don't know if that is any help.

Good luck|||I would like to suggest to try to get as much information as you could before making up your mind, here http://www.AutoInsuranceFree.info/free-auto-insurance.htm is a very resourceful one.|||It`s Dick Turpin %26amp; Co very easy instalments.|||Try seeing a solicitor.|||u cant u would have to go through your insurance and a solicitor
